Black Masterbatches

Description

Black masterbatches are obtained by dispersing carbon blacks into thermoplastic resins. The products developed by the carbon black industry over the years differ in particle dimension and structure, surface area, and purity. The unique and multiple characteristics of carbon black make concentrates, in turn, multifunctional. Not only different shades, but also mechanical support, thermal and chemical inertia, electrical and thermal conductivity. Carbon blacks with very small particles have a great surface area and require suitable measures to reach high concentration in formulations and obtain optimal dispersion. These products ensure a deep shade and outstanding surface properties. Coarser carbon blacks, on the other hand, although having poorer colouring properties, can be used for ordinary applications. Carbon blacks with high structure, a typical characteristic of electrically conductive carbon blacks, call for dispersion technologies that can preserve this characteristic. Finally, if there are restrictions on the use of carbon black in articles for food contact, it is possible to formulate special black concentrates made with iron oxides, which, though less covering, offer a valid and effective alternative. Base resins used to prepare black concentrates are LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PVC, TPU, along with post-consume resins, in order to develop a circular sustainable economy.

The main characteristics of black concentrates are:

  • Masterbatch with high  jetness and high colorant strenght
  • Excellent dispersion, with high pigment concentration as well
  • Great extrusion and moulding processability
  • Dispersion uniformity
  • High granule dimension homogeneity for efficient dosing
  • UV resistance
  • Thermal resistance
  • Adjustable electrical conductibility
  • Stability of electrical properties in relation to transformation conditions
  • Compliance with current national and international standards, especially the ones concerning food contact.

Processing

All black masterbatches produced by MESGO Iride Colors are made using the state-of-the-art technology of carbon black dispersion in thermoplastic resins. Thanks to the highly automated systems and to the modular management of formulations, versatility, stability and quality of concentrates can be assured. This results in ease of use and high quality in terms of appearance, mechanical and electrical properties of the finished products.
